Ukraine will not receive the promised F-16 fighters anytime soon
25.01.2024 - 10:09American senators claim they are nearing an agreement on the southern border. However, the House of Representatives seems to be moving further away from approving this deal, which the U.S. authorities tie to the funding for Ukraine.
This information is reported by The Hill.
According to the publication, Speaker of the House Mike Johnson is demanding that any new aid to Kyiv be accompanied by stricter immigration policies. Democratic lawmakers vehemently reject the proposed reforms.
This dispute has sparked numerous mutual accusations, with Democrats criticizing Republicans for abandoning a foreign ally. In response, Republicans blame Democrats for undermining national security and failing in immigration policy. However, neither side seems willing to compromise, notes The Hill.
The Republicans’ willingness to provide another substantial package of military aid to Kyiv has sharply declined. Therefore, there are serious doubts that Speaker Johnson, who conservatives are already threatening to remove from his position, will even introduce a bill on this matter for a vote, according to the publication.
The upcoming presidential elections also diminish the chances of Congress reaching an agreement on supporting Ukraine. The frontrunner in the race, Donald Trump, has made it clear that he opposes any Senate agreement on Ukraine and the border, thereby pushing for a similar position among Republicans, as highlighted by The Hill.
