‘The best, most motivated people are no longer there’: a military medic criticized the total unprofessionalism in the army
02.02.2024 - 09:25During a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeriy Zaluzhny, stated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces should not expect rapid progress on the battlefield due to a number of problems.
This information comes from The Washington Post.
The media provides new details of the meeting, during which the president proposed to the commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces to write a resignation statement.
According to sources, Zelensky told the general that a change in the leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is needed for “renewal.” He also added that society is increasingly tired of the war, and Western assistance has slowed down.
In response, Zaluzhny outlined the problems that his likely successor would inherit, “explaining thereby why rapid improvement in Ukraine’s position on the battlefield is unlikely.”
“Any new commander will still be fighting against larger and better-armed forces in a war that has entered an exhausting, painful deadlock. A new commander will still need a significant influx of additional soldiers to replenish losses and match Russia’s plan to deploy another 400,000 troops into battle. And the Ukrainian forces will still need more of everything: weapons, ammunition, vehicles, and other equipment,” as reported by The Washington Post, citing Zaluzhny.
Zelensky listened “attentively” to all this. And while an order for Zaluzhny’s removal is expected this week, there is still a chance that the president may change his mind.
The issue of mobilization is called the root of the recent disagreements by the publication.
“To gain an advantage on the battlefield, Zaluzhny told the president, he must mobilize at least as many people as Russia plans to – about 400,000. Ukraine must also prepare for losses that are expected to be comparable to those of last year,” the general’s demand is conveyed by the source.
But Zelensky refused to call up such a large number of people – partly due to a lack of funds for it. Additionally, “an aggressive call-up would also be politically unpopular for the president,” writes The Washington Post.
