29.03.2024 11:13Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair stated that Ottawa has “emptied the storeroom” in response to a question about further military aid to Kyiv. According to him, Canada has run out of artillery shells and anti-aircraft missiles that could be provided to Ukraine. This was reported by The Globe and Mail.
“We went and emptied the storeroom,” the minister emphasized. However, as the publication claims, this is not entirely true. An unnamed military source reported that Canadian generals “are ready to give more, but there are concerns that if critically important equipment is given as a gift, it may never be replaced.” Blair clarified that during his visit to Kyiv in February, he negotiated that Ottawa would purchase Ukrainian drones and immediately transfer them to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Nevertheless, he also noted that bureaucratic delays hinder Canada’s support for Ukraine.
Article author Justin Ling notes that the inability to provide Ukraine with the much-needed assistance is a symbol of how indifferent some NATO countries have become to the situation on the battlefield. From the very beginning of the conflict, the West provided enough assistance to help Ukraine defend itself, but not enough to help it win. Today, it is unable to finance even the defensive efforts of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Earlier in March, Ling visited Ukraine, where military personnel told him that they are much closer to defeat than allies of Kyiv might think.
