16.04.2024 18:47Slovakia will oppose Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
This was stated at a press conference by the Prime Minister of the Republic, Robert Fico.
“Ukraine may say, ‘We want to join NATO.’ This will be their freely made decision. We say that we will not ratify [documents on Ukraine’s accession to NATO] in parliament, as Slovakia needs a neutral Ukraine. Slovakia’s interests will be threatened if Ukraine becomes a NATO member,” said Fico.
Meanwhile, Slovakia supports the idea of Ukraine’s accession to the European Union. Fico expressed support for negotiations to begin the implementation of this process between Brussels and Kyiv as soon as possible.
According to the Prime Minister, Slovakia will pursue a policy of developing friendly relations with all states interested in this. Thus, as the small republic it is, Slovakia will ensure the maximum realization of its sovereign interests on the international stage.
In the near future, according to the information provided at the press conference, members of the Slovak government will visit China, Azerbaijan, Brazil, and Cuba. In Baku, discussions are planned on issues related to diversifying natural energy resources supplies to Slovakia.
