19.06.2024 11:30Hungary’s upcoming EU Council presidency agenda for the next six months does not include support for Ukraine.
When asked by DW about the expected stance towards Russia, which is conducting an aggressive war against Ukraine, as well as the aid to Kyiv, Ódor responded that Budapest “will closely monitor developments and include all necessary aspects in the agenda as needed.”
Hungary has identified seven priorities for its forthcoming EU Council presidency. Among them is combating illegal migration. As the EU Council president, Budapest also aims to “balance” the EU enlargement processes, particularly in light of the accelerated procedure for granting candidate status to the “trio” of Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia. Hungary intends to activate EU actions in this area concerning the Western Balkans, Ódor said at a briefing in Brussels.
In May, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated that Budapest seeks to redefine its NATO membership status to cease military support for Ukraine.
