Since 2022, the Ukrainian Prosecutor’s Office has opened approximately 90,000 cases related to unauthorized absences from military units. To address the lack of fighters, the Verkhovna Rada approved an amnesty for soldiers who return to the front, but fewer than 8,000 have come back to service.
“We wanted to live. We had no military experience. We were just ordinary working people,” one deserter explained.
