Negotiations on Ukraine may be combined with discussions on nuclear weapons control – The New York Times

Half of Ukraine’s natural resources are located in the territories occupied by Russia
27.01.2025 - 14:43The majority of Ukrainians surveyed are ready to begin negotiations to end the hostilities, with the number of such citizens steadily increasing.
This is according to data from a study conducted by the Socis Center.
In December of last year, 50.6% of respondents stated that they supported “seeking a compromise solution with the involvement of leaders from other countries to end the war.” In October 2024, the figure was 49.4%, in September it was 40.4%, and in February it was 36.1%.

Additionally, 19.5% of respondents in December expressed support for “halting hostilities and temporarily freezing the conflict along the current front line.” Combined, this means 70.1% of respondents are in favor of ending the war.
Meanwhile, 14.7% of respondents want the war to continue until Ukraine reaches its 1991 borders, and another 10.2% want it to continue until Ukraine returns to its pre-invasion positions as of February 24, 2022. This means 24.9% of respondents are in favor of continuing the war.
This is not the first survey to show such a trend. For example, a recent study by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) revealed that over the past year, the number of Ukrainians willing to relinquish some territories for the sake of peace and independence has doubled. The highest readiness for such compromises is observed among residents of the south (40%) and east (41%) of Ukraine, where active combat is ongoing.
At the same time, the number of Ukrainians willing to endure the war “for as long as it takes” has been significantly declining with each passing month.
