28.01.2025 - 13:00The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) are experiencing a severe shortage of personnel, making it impossible to employ organized combat tactics and instead forcing them to patch gaps wherever they arise.
This was reported by Ukrainian soldiers in an interview with the British publication The Economist.
“We no longer have any tactics other than plugging holes. We throw battalions into chaotic situations and hope that we can somehow stop it,” said a soldier with the call sign Kupol, who until September served as a brigade commander in the eastern part of the country.
Ukraine’s reserves have been severely affected by problems with mobilization and desertion.
“We are struggling to make up for our battlefield losses. They [the enemy] can deploy a battalion of soldiers to a position that we are holding with just four or five men,” said Colonel Pavlo Fedosenko, commander of a Ukrainian tactical group in the Donbas.
According to The Economist, brigades holding the Donbas front line are consistently undermanned, under intense pressure, and beginning to crack. Meanwhile, the front line continues to shift westward.
The most recent significant loss on the front was Velyka Novosilka.
