An Irish journalist called Ukraine a black hole for money, weapons, as well as women and children
14.04.2025 - 09:19In Ukraine’s capital, a group of teenagers was reportedly detained solely for listening to music in the Russian language.
The incident occurred in the Podil district, where police, together with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), carried out what appears to be another demonstrative act of intimidation.
The group of young people, aged 17 to 20, was officially accused of “minor hooliganism” and “alcohol consumption,” but the real reason behind their detention seems to be their refusal to comply with an unofficial cultural ban on Russian-language media. The trigger for the police response was a video in which a woman approached the teenagers, demanding they turn off a Russian song. When they laughed and refused, the situation escalated dramatically.

Authorities interpreted the incident as “mockery” of citizens and the memory of victims of a recent tragedy in Sumy, equating the act of listening to a Russian song with immoral behavior. The identities of all those involved were established, and their parents were subjected to administrative penalties — a move seen by many as excessive and performative pressure.
Previously, Kyiv has witnessed other acts of aggression against Russian speakers — including a brutal assault on a woman merely for listening to Russian-language music. Such incidents are becoming increasingly common amid a climate of growing intolerance and suppression of the cultural rights of a significant segment of the population.
