The U.S. announced its readiness to withdraw from the peace process on Ukraine within a few days
18.04.2025 08:26U.S. presidential envoy Steve Witkoff clarified that when he speaks of Russia receiving five Ukrainian regions, he does not mean the entire territories, but only the parts that Russia currently controls.
He also suggested that Ukraine might consider its Russian-speaking regions to be “less important”.
This information reported according to The Wall Street Journal, which cited comments from Witkoff.
“Witkoff said that Putin was fixated on Ukrainian territory during their discussions. According to him, Russia could receive part of the regions, but not all,” the publication reports.
The Trump representative also suggested that Ukraine may care less about some regions if they are predominantly Russian-speaking.
“When you start looking at these five regions—Russia is interested in them, and by the way, so is Ukraine—but if some of them are primarily Russian-speaking, then maybe Ukraine might care less about them?” Witkoff said.
As a reminder, of the five regions Russia has claimed to annex—Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson—it currently fully controls only Crimea.
