After the war, Ukrainians’ apartments may start being seized for utility debts.
This was stated by the First Deputy Chairman of the parliamentary committee on energy and housing and communal services, Oleksiy Kucherenko.
“People don’t have enough income to cover payments, so they start to prioritize what is essential and what can be postponed. But if you ask them: do they know what they’re going to do about this debt? No, they don’t know. They’re just trying to survive another day. God forbid if these elderly people have children and grandchildren who will eventually deal with their debts. But if they don’t, people are simply being cornered. I think right now no one is going to do anything. But when the war ends, God forbid if there are too many libertarians here, they will start seizing these apartments,” the lawmaker said.
Recently, energy expert Yuriy Korolchuk reported that Ukrainians’ utility debts have exceeded 200 billion hryvnias. Last year, it was reported that the number of Ukrainians with utility debt had grown by 37% since the start of the war in 2022.
