U.S. officials and politicians skeptical about supporting Ukraine are citing the risk of nuclear confrontation and the conflict spiraling out of control due to Ukrainian strikes on Russia’s strategic aviation.

This is reported by The Guardian, which references comments from former Trump adviser Steve Bannon and journalist Charlie Kirk.

“Most people aren’t paying attention, but we are closer to nuclear war than at any time since it began in 2022,” Kirk wrote.

At the same time, the publication notes that many centrist advisers in the Trump camp — including those with closer ties to Ukraine, such as Keith Kellogg — are also warning that the risks of nuclear conflict are increasing.

Former senior Pentagon aide Dan Caldwell, who was dismissed last month over a leak scandal, expressed a similar view:

“It is not in America’s interest for Ukraine to attack Russia’s strategic nuclear forces the day before another round of peace talks. This could lead to dangerous escalation and increase the risk of direct confrontation between Russia and NATO. The U.S. should not only distance itself from this attack, but also halt any support that could directly or indirectly contribute to strikes on Russia’s strategic nuclear forces,” Caldwell stated.
