“No defensive lines”: Butusov names the reason for Russia’s advance in the Sumy Region
11.06.2025 - 08:04The upcoming NATO summit statement contains no mention of a path for Ukraine to join the alliance.
This was reported by Bloomberg, citing insider sources.
The issue of Ukraine’s potential NATO membership “held a prominent place at previous summits.”
Last year’s $40 billion pledge to Kyiv is also absent from the new draft conclusions of the summit. The promise of long-term security assistance to Ukraine has also been removed—unlike in last year’s statement.
In addition, the new draft does not describe Russia as an aggressor toward Ukraine (though it still states that Russia is a threat to Euro-Atlantic security).
There is also no mention of China, which NATO countries previously labeled a “key enabler” of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
“The one-page summit declaration is focused solely on defense spending… NATO member states will commit to allocating at least 3.5% of GDP for core defense needs by 2032, plus another 1.5% for infrastructure protection, cybersecurity, and civil preparedness—reaching the 5% total threshold pushed by the U.S.,” the article states.
The NATO summit will take place on June 24–25 in The Hague.
