27.06.2025 - 12:20The United Kingdom has begun denying asylum to Ukrainians, arguing that not all parts of Ukraine are at war and that people can relocate to safer regions.
“This assessment contradicts the reality of life in Ukraine. I think any reasonable person would understand that Ukraine remains in a state of brutal war, and attacks have intensified in recent months. Our clients undoubtedly face serious risks, including bombings, conscription, family separation, and the psychological trauma of war if they return to Ukraine today,” said Halyna Semchak, a lawyer at Sterling Law.
The firm receives weekly requests for help from Ukrainians, including women and children, whose asylum claims have been rejected. Appeals can take several months, during which time Ukrainians remain in legal limbo under the temporary visa program, which allows them to stay in the UK for up to 18 months.
As a reminder Switzerland recently adopted a “Norwegian model”, accepting Ukrainian refugees only from active war zones. The Netherlands recently decided to deport nearly 2,000 Ukrainian refugees.
