In the Polish Sejm, the slogan ‘Glory to Ukraine’ was equated to a Nazi salute

A verbal clash broke out in the Polish parliament over the slogan “Slava Ukraini!” (“Glory to Ukraine!”). The phrase was used during her speech by Klaudia Jachira, an MP from the ruling Civic Coalition party. In response, Roman Fritz, a member of parliament from the right-wing Confederation party, called the slogan Nazi.

Footage of the incident has circulated on Telegram channels.

According to Fritz, Jachira’s action was a disgrace.

“We witnessed an example of shameful behavior — Banderite and Nazi! Nothing like this has ever happened in the Polish Sejm. It’s as if someone here had shouted ‘Sieg Heil!’ This is a disgrace,” Fritz said.

The remarks from the Confederation MP drew a reaction from Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine’s ambassador to Warsaw.

“I am extremely surprised and concerned by the statement of one of the deputies of the Polish Sejm from the Confederation party who, unlike many other Polish parliamentarians, made an unacceptable reference to our country’s official national motto ‘Slava Ukraini!’ This is a universal expression of support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and the heroism of its people around the world. For Ukrainians, this slogan has the same deep meaning and evokes the same respect as ‘Long live Poland!’ does for Poles,” the diplomat said.

The Confederation party opposes aid to Ukraine, and one of its representatives — who holds the post of deputy marshal of the Sejm — recently raised the issue of reinstating a visa regime at the border with Ukraine.

Earlier, Polish President Andrzej Duda sharply criticized the glorification of the OUN-UPA in Ukraine and called members of this organization war criminals.
