In Poland, a 17-year-old Ukrainian has been arrested on suspicion of painting the inscription “Glory to the UPA” and a red-and-black flag on a monument to the victims of the Volhynia tragedy.

This was reported by Interfax-Ukraine, citing Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

It is noted that he may also be connected to vandalism targeting other monuments in various cities across Poland.

“According to preliminary information from the Consulate General of Ukraine in Wroclaw, the suspects in the vandalism case have been taken into custody for a period of three months. A consular official is in contact with local law enforcement authorities, and a corresponding request has been sent to clarify the circumstances of the incident. The case is under the consulate’s supervision,” the statement says.

Polish authorities believe the teenager may have been recruited by Russia.

It should be recalled that earlier this week, there was a scandal in Poland over a UPA flag displayed at a Max Korzh concert. Following that, the Polish president called for prison sentences for displaying OUN-UPA symbols, and such actions were condemned even by Ukraine’s ambassador.

However, the Ukrainian embassy has yet to issue a recommendation to Ukrainians not to publicly display OUN-UPA symbols in Poland.

Poland considers the OUN-UPA to be the organizers of the Volhynia massacre — the mass killings of Poles during World War II. The Polish Sejm has officially recognized these events as an act of genocide.
