Axios writes that Trump did not support Putin’s demand to withdraw Ukrainian forces from Donbas, and the Russian president dropped it
19.08.2025 05:36American officials are extremely dissatisfied with Ukraine’s refusal to recognize Russia’s control over the entire Donbas.
This was reported by Politico, citing a source.
According to the outlet, the U.S. government sees the “concession of Donbas” as a “strong card” it was able to secure for Ukraine in negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“American officials are reportedly unhappy that Ukraine is unwilling… (to recognize Russia’s control over all of Donbas — Ed.)… The U.S. government views the ‘concession of Donbas’ as a ‘strong card’ it was able to win for Ukraine,” the publication said.
At the same time, it is noted that in Washington there is a belief that Ukraine should agree to these territorial concessions “since it will lose those territories in Donetsk region anyway.”
Earlier, the European Union officially stated that during his meeting with Trump in Alaska, Putin proposed the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from Donetsk region.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, however, has repeatedly said that it is “impossible” for Ukraine to hand over its territory to Russia.
