01.09.2025 10:20Budapest will block the opening of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.
This was announced on social network X by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó.
According to Szijjártó, Hungary will also work together with U.S. President Donald Trump to reach an agreement with Russian leader Vladimir Putin and block sanctions that could harm Hungary’s energy sector.
“The European Commission has once again acted as the Commission of Ukraine, serving Kyiv’s interests above those of its own members,” the minister wrote.
It should be recalled that recently Politico reported that U.S. President Donald Trump convinced Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán not to obstruct Ukraine’s EU accession.
Earlier, Bloomberg published similar information, stating that this happened during a phone conversation between Trump and Orbán. However, Budapest denied that such a call took place, as well as denying that Hungary had lifted its veto on Ukraine’s EU membership talks.
