07.09.2025 15:12Washington is winding down military aid programs for the armies of European countries bordering Russia.
This was reported by the British newspaper The Financial Times.
According to the outlet, last week Pentagon representatives informed European diplomats that the United States would no longer fund training and equipment programs for the armed forces of Eastern European countries, which would be on the front line in the event of a military conflict with Russia.
Senate aides estimate that the cuts could affect a program under which $1.6 billion was allocated to Europe between 2018 and 2022. The key recipients were Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
At the same time, another program — Foreign Military Financing, which allows Europeans to purchase major weapons systems (planes, ships, tanks) from the U.S. — will not be affected by the cuts.
The publication notes that the decision aligns with the position of the Pentagon’s chief strategic adviser, Elbridge Colby, who is pushing for reallocating U.S. military resources in favor of the Indo-Pacific region to contain China and reduce the risk of conflict over Taiwan.
Earlier, Politico reported that the U.S. may withdraw up to one-third of its troops from Europe.
