23.09.2025 12:29NATO has warned that it could deliver a military response to Russia if Western airspace violations are repeated.
This was stated in a communiqué released after a meeting convened by Estonia following the incursion of three Russian fighter jets into its airspace. NATO scrambled its own aircraft to intercept and escort the MiGs out of Estonian airspace.
The statement noted that several other NATO countries — including Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Romania — “have also recently faced violations of their airspace by Russia.”
“This intrusion is part of a broader pattern of increasingly irresponsible Russian behavior. Russia must have no doubt: NATO and its allies will use all necessary military and non-military means for self-defense and to deter threats from any direction, in full compliance with international law. We will continue to respond at a time, place, and manner of our choosing. Our commitment to Article 5 is ironclad,” the declaration said.
It also emphasized that Russia’s actions “will not deter the Allies from fulfilling their enduring commitments to support Ukraine.”
Just days earlier, NATO reaffirmed its readiness to defend Estonian territory in response to the airspace violation.
