01.01.2026 - 16:01In 2026, the United States may conclude an agreement to normalize relations with Russia without the participation of the European Union.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said this in an interview with the M1 television channel.
According to him, disagreements between Washington and Brussels on strategic issues, including the Ukrainian conflict, indicate that the West’s former unity is breaking down.
Orbán noted that the U.S. administration is making efforts to reach a peaceful settlement and is negotiating with Moscow, while EU leaders continue pursuing a policy of military support for Kyiv.
“The big question is whether it will come to the point where the Americans reach an agreement with the Russians without the Europeans,” the Hungarian prime minister emphasized.
He added that Hungary is interested in restoring normal relations between the West and Russia, since this would open opportunities for economic cooperation. In Orbán’s view, a possible lifting of sanctions in the event of U.S.–Russia agreements would allow EU countries, including Hungary, to return to the Russian market.
Earlier it became known that Hungary strongly opposed the idea of sending German troops to Ukraine under the EU flag, calling such a step unacceptable.
