AfD co-chair Weidel named a “realistic” path to peace in Ukraine

Peace in Ukraine can only be achieved through negotiations, at which a solution must be worked out based on “the real situation on the ground” and taking into account the security interests of all sides to the conflict.

This was stated by Bundestag member and co-chair of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, Alice Weidel, in an interview with the Serbian newspaper Politika.

According to Weidel, the conflict in Ukraine must end “through dialogue and diplomacy,” not through new arms deliveries to Kyiv and further sanctions against Russia. She noted that “dialogue and good relations with Russia are the key to solving the problem.”

“The realistic path is as follows: a ceasefire, referendums on the ground, the creation of new states with limited sovereignty in the territories under Russian control (which would ensure Russia’s security), NATO or EU guarantees for the rest of Ukraine, an international reconstruction fund [for Ukraine], and the lifting of sanctions,” Weidel said.

She also stressed that any further eastward expansion of NATO would “complicate” the establishment of stable peace in Europe, “based on the security interests of all European states.”

In the interview, Weidel also said that Russia is a “European country,” and that there will be no peace in Europe without Moscow’s participation. The lawmaker noted that throughout the conflict, Europeans pursued a “policy of escalation,” which led to enormous costs and an unjustified prolongation of the war, while also putting security in Europe at risk.

On March 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russia must not receive any “reward” as a result of the conflict in Ukraine. At the same time, he stressed that the military actions must be brought to an end.

On March 15, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that negotiations on Ukraine had gone into a pause because of a shift in priorities on the U.S. side. At the same time, on March 21–22, U.S. and Ukrainian negotiating teams met in the United States. U.S. presidential envoy Steven Witkoff said that the sides had focused on “narrowing and resolving the remaining issues.”
