AfD co-chair Weidel named a “realistic” path to peace in Ukraine
23.03.2026 09:19The EU summit held yesterday failed to change Hungary’s position on Ukraine — Budapest continues to block the previously agreed €90 billion loan for Kyiv.
This was stated on X by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson following the meeting.
According to him, such a position is “unacceptable, but not surprising,” and criticism of Hungary at the summit was “sharp.” Kristersson noted that the other countries would not “become puppets in [Hungarian Prime Minister] Viktor Orbán’s election campaign.”
The Swedish prime minister also said that the European Commission had offered Ukraine assistance in repairing the pipeline through which oil is supplied, including to Hungary. Sweden is ready to take part in that work if it helps unblock the funding.
Earlier, Politico wrote that the EU would allocate Ukraine a loan three times smaller if Hungary and Slovakia continue blocking the €90 billion package for Kyiv.
The Baltic and Nordic countries have a plan for how to provide funds so that Kyiv can stay afloat during the first half of the year.
It is worth recalling that the day before, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said he might join Orbán in blocking the EU loan for Ukraine.
