In the West, they believe that Ukraine’s prospects for joining NATO are “dead” – The Economist

The prospect of Ukraine joining NATO, even in the distant future, is “dead.”

This was stated anonymously to The Economist by Western officials.

The article notes that former U.S. President Joe Biden opposed Ukraine’s membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, while current White House chief Donald Trump is even more categorical.

In addition, France and Germany do not support Ukraine’s rapid accession to the European Union, instead promoting the idea of intermediate forms of integration — for example, Ukraine’s participation in EU institutions without voting rights. The possibility of extending to Ukraine the mutual defense clause enshrined in Article 42.7 of the EU treaties is also being discussed.

As a reminder, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte recently once again stated that Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance is not currently on the agenda.
