IAEA records damage to Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant’s turbine hall following drone strike
31.05.2026 18:30The conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio about retaliatory strikes on targets in Kyiv has become a warning for Western countries.
This is reported by the Swiss publication Die Weltwoche.
“Although Moscow has not yet carried out its threat, the very fact that it was voiced indicates that the stakes continue to rise,” the article states.
The authors of the publication note that the Ukrainian conflict has always had two sides — Russia and the West — but now “the adversaries are drawing ever closer to a new level of escalation.”
In the authors’ view, European leaders are deliberately ignoring the warning signs and the possible consequences of their own decisions. They continue to develop the thesis of Russia’s weakness, despite Vladimir Putin’s statements that the conflict is nearing its end.
On May 25, Lavrov held a phone call with Rubio, during which he conveyed to Washington that Russia’s Armed Forces were beginning systematic strikes on targets in Kyiv used for the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said that the U.S. Secretary of State carefully took note of all signals on the Ukrainian issue from the Russian foreign minister.
