Lavrov: Russia sees no progress on Ukraine almost a year after the Anchorage summit

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Russian side has observed no progress in resolving the situation around Ukraine — neither in the year since the Alaska summit, nor any desire on Washington’s part to persuade Kyiv to accept the American proposals.

He made the statement in an interview with Izvestia on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

“On August 15, it will be one year since the Alaska summit was held to consider the American proposals on Ukraine. The Russian leadership accepted those proposals. And since then we have observed no progress, no desire to persuade Ukraine to accept these American proposals,” Lavrov said.

The minister also drew attention to the fact that all the sanctions introduced by former U.S. President Joe Biden continue to be extended. According to him, new restrictions from the Donald Trump administration have been added to them as well — in particular, against Lukoil and Rosneft.

Lavrov separately addressed the military support for Ukraine. According to him, the Pentagon, no longer concealing it, is supporting not only European purchases of American weapons for Ukraine, but also joint programs with Ukrainians for the development of various types of armaments. “The Pentagon budget includes a line item in this area to provide security assistance to Ukraine through 2029. That is, this is no longer Biden’s legacy — this is a decision of the current administration,” the minister emphasized.

Lavrov also cited the position that, according to him, official Washington voices in negotiations — including through negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner:

“Our American colleagues, including the two negotiators you mentioned, tell us: if only we could get rid of Ukraine, this problem that was handed down to us as a legacy, then we would have joint mutually beneficial projects, but Ukraine needs to be settled first,” — the Russian foreign minister conveyed the words of the American side.

According to Lavrov, when Moscow hears such things, it proceeds from the view that, from Russia’s perspective, “Ukraine was settled in Anchorage in August 2025, insofar as it depends on the Russian Federation.” The minister explained that Russia accepted the U.S. proposal, with the Americans acting as mediator, but after one of the parties accepted the proposal, the American side “somehow cooled to the process” and exerted no pressure on Ukraine.
