18.06.2026 05:03A representative of Donald Trump’s administration told Politico that the American president still expects a peace agreement on Ukraine to be reached.
“The president has a humane heart and he wants this war to end. The president and his team have worked very hard on ending the war between Russia and Ukraine, and he remains optimistic that we will ultimately reach a peace agreement,” the Trump administration representative said.
A senior official from the American president’s administration also described Trump as “the only person on the planet” capable of bringing Russia and Ukraine together and “trying to negotiate” an end to the conflict.
At the same time, European officials, according to Politico, fear a possible attempt by Trump to return to peace negotiations while bypassing allies. They worry that the American leader could leave Europeans “on the sidelines,” thereby undermining their strategy aimed at exerting “maximum pressure” on Russia and supporting Ukraine.
On June 15, Trump promised that Washington would return to resolving the conflict in Ukraine after a deal with Iran is concluded. The day before, on June 14, during a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump emphasized that an end to the Ukrainian conflict would open new prospects in relations between Washington and Moscow.
Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov said on June 14 that U.S. presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff and Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner would be traveling to Russia in the near future.
Previously, Zelensky and Trump discussed a trilateral meeting with Putin.
