14.10.2026 06:02Vasyl Voskoboinyk, head of the Office of Migration Policy, stated that Ukraine’s population has decreased by 800,000 people over the course of 2025, taking into account mortality and citizens leaving the country.
According to Voskoboinyk, deaths in the country outnumber births by 3.5 times. In the first half of the year, for every 10 newborns there were 35 deaths.
“In the context of population decline — and let us not forget that in the first half of the year, for every newborn child in Ukraine there were 35 deaths. Ten were born and 35 died,” the expert stated.
In addition to natural population decrease, the demographic situation is being compounded by a mass outflow of citizens abroad.
“On top of that, whatever one may say, there is migration out of Ukraine. People are leaving. Over 2025, if you count the number of those who died plus the number of those who left, the population has decreased by 800,000 people,” the head of the OMP summed up.
Earlier, in September, Ukrainian economist Oleksiy Kushch stated that the number of schoolchildren in Ukraine had fallen by more than three times compared to the Soviet era, which may indicate a large-scale demographic crisis. It was also reported in the summer that the death rate in Ukraine is four times higher than the birth rate, and that the demographic situation continues to worsen.
