05.03.2025 - 12:21Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appears ready to accept the conditions set by U.S. President Donald Trump.
This assessment comes from BBC News correspondent Tom Bateman, who shared his opinion following Zelensky’s latest statement expressing his willingness to work under “the strong leadership of President Trump” to achieve peace in Ukraine.
“The key question now is whether Zelensky’s statement will be enough for Washington. Trump wants the Ukrainian president to do two things: first, sign the mineral resources deal, and then agree to a rapid ceasefire without any security guarantees from the U.S. Zelensky appears to signal that he is willing to take this path, calling the deal a ‘step’ toward security guarantees, which he still hopes to obtain,” Bateman writes.
“But there is also an emotional element to all of this. We saw how Zelensky was humiliated by the Trump administration on Friday—he was called ungrateful and disrespectful—and since then, the dismissive comments have only increased. In Washington, there is a sense that the Trump administration wants to see Zelensky humbled in order to restore relations with the White House and secure the resumption of military aid. Tonight, we will get a clearer picture of whether Zelensky has done enough when Trump addresses Congress,” Bateman adds.
Earlier, Reuters reported that the United States and Ukraine were preparing to sign a minerals agreement. It was stated that Trump intended to announce the signing of the deal during his address to Congress.
It is worth noting that Trump has not directly responded to Zelensky’s expression of “regret.” The potential reaction from the U.S. president remains uncertain.
