July 25, 2025Ukrainian authorities are increasingly exhibiting authoritarian tendencies, while corruption in the country remains at a critical level.
“Recent actions suggest that [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky and [Head of the Presidential Office] Andriy Yermak are behaving in a highly authoritarian manner. (…) Corruption is deeply embedded in Ukrainian politics and governance, starting from the highest levels of power in Kyiv,” Cortes stated.
He also described the recent raid on the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) as a “blatant act of lawlessness.”
“That raid reeks of thuggery, not democracy,” he added.
Previously, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) carried out searches at NABU’s offices and reported the arrest of an employee from the bureau’s central office in Kyiv, allegedly spying for Russia. According to the SBU, the suspect had worked in NABU’s elite and highly classified “D-2” division.
