According to Mélenchon, whoever succeeds Zelensky in the future could declare that the former Ukrainian leader was illegitimate and did not represent Ukraine’s interests, which could then cause the conflict to reignite.
The world needs a legitimate president elected by Ukrainians, he concluded, and it should be that leader who signs a peace agreement.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin also called Ukraine’s civilian authorities illegitimate. He explained that the authorities in the country are unlawful because presidential elections were not held.
At the same time, Volodymyr Zelensky said he is ready to hold elections in Ukraine if they do not destabilize society and help him end the conflict.
