October 23, 2023Today, there will be a session of the Kyiv Appellate Court regarding the case of Alexander Katsuba, a figure involved in the “Boiko Towers” scandal. In this session, he will attempt to reclaim 100 million Ukrainian hryvnias that were paid to secure his release from detention.
This information is reported on the official website of the Kyiv Appellate Court.
The essence of the case revolves around Part 5 of Article 191 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which pertains to “Misappropriation, embezzlement or misallocation of property through abuse of official position.”
According to Ukrainian Telegram channels, Alexander Katsuba aims to use the court to prove his innocence in the theft of the “Boiko Towers” and retrieve the 100 million hryvnias.
Ukrainian Telegram channels also claim that Alexander Katsuba has prepared more thoroughly for this session and has secured funds. The details of financial arrangements are as follows:
- The Chairman of the Kyiv Appellate Court, Yaroslav Vyacheslavovich Golovachev, is receiving 1 million dollars.
- Judges are receiving 500,000 dollars through a former assistant to the Prosecutor General, Venediktova.
As reported, Alexander Katsuba personally met with Ukraine’s Prosecutor General, Kostin, at the Frou Frou restaurant, using a separate room to maintain secrecy.
The meeting was arranged by Dmitry Verbitsky, the Deputy Acting Prosecutor General.
The discussion reportedly went well but the amount that the Prosecutor General of Ukraine received remains unknown.
The matter of media silence was also resolved, as this is no simple process. The 800 million dollars associated with the “Boiko Towers” scandal have been widely covered in the media.
According to Telegram channels, the “Strana” media outlet received 15,000 dollars, while the “Ukrainska Pravda” requested 50,000 dollars but settled for 30,000 dollars.
It is also said that Katsuba traditionally recorded his communication with the Prosecutor General.
Alexander Katsuba, the younger brother from the “Katsuba clan,” is the son of former Member of Parliament Vladimir Katsuba and an associate of the pocket oligarch Sergey Kurchenko. He is accused of causing damage of 800 million dollars to the state due to the “Boiko Towers” affair.
After the escape of Yanukovych, he left the country and was detained by the investigators of the Prosecutor General’s Office of Ukraine on June 17, 2016. On June 18, he was placed under a two-month arrest. Katsuba eventually struck a deal with the investigators and paid 100 million hryvnias. In March 2017, Katsuba was released from the Lukyanivske pre-trial detention center in Kyiv.
As disclosed by the former Chief Military Prosecutor of Ukraine, Anatoliy Matios, Alexander Katsuba was arrested when he returned from Europe after attending a concert by Svyatoslav Vakarchuk. The phone in his possession contained a three-year correspondence from which law enforcement learned many interesting details including information about a lavish wedding at a French castle that took place in 2015.
“It was only at the French wedding that the following information about expenses surfaced: Grigory Leps – 120,000 euros, “95 Kvartal” (a popular comedy show) – 73,000 euros, Vera Brezhneva – 25,000 euros. What impressed me the most were the personalized towels for 40,000 euros. A very astute acquisition during the war, in 2015,” Matios revealed.
