22.08.2024 12:45Czech President Petr Pavel stated that a “just peace” for Ukraine at the end of the war is an “illusion.”
He made this comment in an interview with Novinky.
“A just peace, if imagined in terms of ‘100 percent or nothing,’ would mean Ukraine fully regaining control over its territory, including Crimea. It would also involve compensation for war damages by the aggressor. But, as we probably all sense, this is more of an illusion. The reality will be somewhat different. We should talk about trying to get as close as possible to a just peace,” Pavel said.
He believes that Russia will likely retain control over some part of Ukraine following peace negotiations.
“If peace negotiations take place, we will most likely continue to talk for a long time about the occupation of part of Ukrainian territory by Russia. From the perspective of democratic countries that uphold international law and the UN Charter, it should happen that we respect the agreement between the warring parties, but we do not accept changes to international borders based on aggression. We will consider the territories occupied by Russia as temporarily occupied during the restoration of Ukraine’s sovereignty over the territory it currently controls,” Pavel added.
Previously, Petr Pavel called for involving Russia and China in peace negotiations regarding Ukraine.
