26.08.2024 16:06A massive fish die-off is occurring in the Seym River in the Sumy region.
This is evidenced by videos published on social media.
The authors of the videos remind viewers that the Seym flows into the Desna, and the Desna into the Dnipro. Therefore, if water pollution reaches these rivers, the scale of the disaster could become significantly larger.
The State Border Service reported just under a week ago, on August 21, that pollution of the river was detected near the border with Russia, along with dead fish in the Putyvl district. The agency linked the incident to low dissolved oxygen levels and an excess of pesticides. However, the border guards did not specify the cause of the oxygen depletion and pesticide overabundance.
Meanwhile, the Seym River passes through the front line near the Russian village of Tetkino. Further upstream, there are bridges and pontoon crossings set up by the Russian army, which are regularly targeted by Ukrainian forces.
