‘They’ve tasted money.’ Why cases of ‘aiding the aggressor’ are being massively opened against Ukrainian businesses
August 26, 2024By launching an offensive in the Kursk region, Ukraine has crossed red lines not only for Russia but also for the United States.
This is reported by Financial Times.
Washington considered the possibility of extending the war onto Russian territory “dangerous” and seeks to avoid a third world war, even if it means reducing support for Ukraine.
“But Ukraine is fighting for its survival. It would welcome direct U.S. involvement in the war with Russia,” the publication writes.
The article recalls a recently published book by American journalist and The New York Times staff member David Sanger, in which the author wrote that Joe Biden once even hinted to his aides that Volodymyr Zelensky might intentionally be trying to drag America into a third world war.
The authors of the article believe that Ukrainians took a cue from Israel by undertaking military actions without Washington’s approval, calculating that if they succeed, Kyiv would receive retroactive approval from America. If they fail, the U.S. would help deal with the consequences.
However, according to Financial Times, the U.S. is unlikely to abandon its caution and will therefore continue to avoid direct conflict with Russia, seriously fearing nuclear war.
“The U.S. does not believe that the last red line has been successfully crossed. Biden’s advisers continue to believe that if Putin thinks his regime is on the brink of total defeat, the Russians may resort to using nuclear weapons. When Ukrainians complain that their allies fear the idea of victory, they are right,” the publication concludes.
