Ukraine has launched an investigation into desertions from an “elite” brigade of the Armed Forces
03.01.2025 - 06:12The ruling party of Slovakia, Direction – Social Democracy (Smer-SD), has expressed readiness to reduce assistance to Ukrainian citizens residing in Slovakia in response to Kyiv’s decision to halt the transit of Russian gas.
“We are ready to discuss and reach an agreement within the coalition to stop electricity supplies and significantly reduce support for Ukrainian citizens on Slovak territory,” he said.
According to Fico, on January 7, a government delegation will participate in negotiations in Brussels, where, as he put it, “Ukrainian politicians had the audacity” to complain about Budapest for potential retaliatory measures following the suspension of gas transit.
“Afterward, coalition representatives will convene, followed by the government. We will discuss what measures we will take to respond appropriately to Zelensky’s sabotage (referring to the decision to halt gas transit through Ukraine),” the prime minister added.
He noted that in the face of halted gas transit, Slovakia’s only alternative is to seek compensation mechanisms to offset an estimated €500 million shortfall in the budget.
Recently, Fico and Zelensky have exchanged sharp accusations. Following Fico’s recent visit to Moscow, Zelensky called on Slovak law enforcement and intelligence agencies to investigate the prime minister’s ties to the Kremlin.
In response, Fico threatened to halt electricity supplies to Ukraine.
