September 27, 2023Germans have heckled Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during their pre-election tour of the country amid issues related to assistance to Ukraine.
This information reported in a Spiegel feature.
Despite representing different political parties, with Scholz being from the Social Democrats and Baerbock from the Greens, the German citizens expressed similar discontent towards both politicians.
The Spiegel report described the reception as follows:
“Insults, cries of ‘boo,’ and a roaring concert of whistles. Not a very pleasant reception for Federal Chancellor Scholz in the center of Nuremberg.”
Angry citizens accused Scholz of causing conflicts in Ukraine, inflation, and the migration crisis. One of the attendees called for the German government’s resignation and the prosecution of its members.
“A change of scenery. The pre-election speech by Annalena Baerbock in Augsburg. By that time, the Greens had become a scarecrow for many. Even the fact that the Foreign Minister was trying to present herself as close to the people could not change that,” said the presenter.
Local residents urged Baerbock to “get out of here” and accused the Greens of supplying weapons to Ukraine.
Journalists concluded that politicians have no choice but to put on a “happy face” and move forward.
Earlier, a survey by the Insa Institute showed that the number of Germans supporting the ruling coalition had reached a new low since the 2021 elections.
