“Lost for words”: the king of Sweden humiliated Zelensky during a visit to Ukraine
20.04.2026 - 07:31French MEP Thierry Mariani called the European Union’s €90 billion loan for Ukraine a lie and a manipulation.
He said this in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, EU citizens and their children will be the ones paying for this “gift.”
“Have you looked at the repayment terms of the loan? It requires Russia to pay war reparations. So this is, at best, a farce; at worst, it is contempt for the voters. This should not be called a loan — it is a €90 billion gift to Ukraine,” the politician said.
He noted that French taxpayers would bear €16 billion of the cost of this “loan.”
“I don’t know what to call it: a lie, cowardice, or manipulation,” he added.
The day before, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that the European Union would have found a way to unblock the €90 billion in military aid for Ukraine regardless of whether Viktor Orbán remained Hungary’s prime minister.
On April 18, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called for the removal of the “Orbán blockade” on decisions concerning the €90 billion loan and his country’s European integration after the parliamentary elections in Hungary.
Earlier, the EU said that the issuance of the loan to Ukraine would be delayed.
