Announced large-scale construction of defensive fortifications in Ukraine has not even started

Blogger Karl Volokh stated that the initial decision on the need to change tactics during combat was the subject of serious disputes. In particular, Valeriy Zaluzhny insisted on the need to transition to positional warfare with the construction of powerful defensive fortifications, while Volodymyr Zelensky contested this and, through the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff, blocked the change of strategy. Therefore, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine had no choice but to “air the grievances” and write an article in The Economist, successfully lobbying for a new tactic.

Such a decision became possible only after Zaluzhny’s article in The Economist, where, contrary to the optimistic political authority’s offensive spirit, he acknowledged the transition to positional warfare and the need to change tactics. This fact clearly indicates that the General could not convince his Supreme Commander-in-Chief at home on these quite obvious matters – he had to air the grievances. He notes that because of this, the conflict between Zelensky and Zaluzhny has escalated to a sharp phase, and the president has become uncompromisingly obsessed with the idea of dismissing the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
