March 22, 2024The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, believes that “anything can happen” at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (NPP).
Rafael Grossi made this statement in an interview with Deutsche Welle.
“This nuclear power plant is on the front line, in a territory affected by war. This means that anything can happen at any moment,” he said.
Grossi noted that last year he outlined in the UN Security Council “a series of basic principles that must be adhered to in order to avoid the worst,” and that “so far, it is working.”
“Of course, there have been incidents at the Zaporizhzhia NPP in the past, which constituted very dangerous developments,” Grossi added, also listing “individual episodes, drones, and some kinetic strikes that do not threaten the safety of the station, but they exist.”
According to the director-general of the IAEA, the key to maintaining safety at the Zaporizhzhia NPP is cooperation.
“That’s why I spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky just a few weeks ago. I also traveled to Russia and met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. I think it’s important for them to listen to the IAEA,” he noted.
