“No more places available”: In a German city, the mayor banned the admission of Ukrainian refugees – The Telegraph
October 18, 2024The White House realized as early as 2022 that it was “stuck” in the war in Ukraine.
This is revealed in the book “War” by American journalist Bob Woodward, which publishes private conversations between U.S. politicians.
According to the book, in November 2022, U.S. President Joe Biden had a conversation with his advisor Jake Sullivan regarding the prospects of the conflict.
Biden reportedly said, “If we don’t drive Russia completely out of Ukraine, we’ll, in some way, allow Putin to get what he wants. But if we manage to drive them out, we risk nuclear war. Putin won’t allow himself to be pushed out without using nuclear weapons. So we’re stuck. Too much success—nuclear war; too little success—unclear long-term consequences.”
Thus, the most desirable outcome of the war for U.S. leadership, according to the book, is either to get Putin to agree to freeze the conflict or to wait for something to break down within Russia itself.
Earlier in the book, it was revealed that the U.S. feared a nuclear strike from Russia amid its defeats in Ukraine in the fall of 2022. Additionally, Woodward writes that Biden mentioned that his predecessor, Barack Obama, under whom he served as vice president, had “messed up” in Ukraine in 2014.
