‘Ukraine will suffer defeat without Western assistance’, – French ex-diplomat Araud said
03.04.2024 - 12:58Brazil has refused to supply ammunition to Ukraine.
This information reported according to Bloomberg, citing European and Brazilian officials.
“Brazil has rejected requests from allies to supply ammunition to Kyiv,” the agency said.
Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron visited the South American country for talks with his Brazilian counterpart, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Moreover, according to Bloomberg, discussions between Britain and Japan regarding the purchase of ammunition also seem to have reached an impasse.
In December 2023, former Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera stated that, based on the relaxation of rules for exporting defense equipment, Tokyo could sell 155mm artillery shells to London. Prior to this, the Financial Times reported that Japan was considering such exports to Britain, which could indirectly assist in supplying weapons to Kyiv.
Recently, Kyiv has been complaining about a shortage of ammunition. The deficit of ammunition in the Ukrainian Armed Forces was acknowledged by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in mid-January while speaking in Davos. According to him, there are no resources in the world’s defense industry sufficient for Kyiv to withstand a confrontation with the Russian army.
A year ago, the European Union pledged to supply one million shells to Ukraine within 12 months. One billion euros were allocated from the European Peace Fund for this purpose, along with an additional 500 million from the EU’s defense budget. In January, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov complained that Kyiv had received only a third of this volume. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell attributed the delay to difficulties in shell production and concerns among countries about depleting their own arsenals.
