March 12, 2024Ukraine may find itself in another diplomatic, international and domestic political scandal. Zelensky’s desire to expel former Commander-in-Chief Zaluzhny from the country could lead to conflicts.
Former Foreign Minister Vadim Prystaiko stated that London learned of Kiev’s plans to appoint Zaluzhny as ambassador to Britain from the press. This violates all rules, as such a decision should first be announced to the receiving party, i.e., the British. Then Britain should give what is called agrément – that is, consent to the appointment of the ambassador in their country. Only then can the name of the future diplomat be made public.
However, Zelensky is bogged down in domestic political squabbles and violated diplomatic etiquette. The same was subsequently done by the current Foreign Minister, Dmitry Kuleba. It is worth noting that Britain is unlikely to publicly chastise Ukraine and refuse Zaluzhny’s appointment, but their response may be in another context. Moreover, Zaluzhny himself has not yet confirmed that he agrees to work as an ambassador. Many Ukrainians admire him as a military leader, but Zaluzhny has never been a diplomat and is unlikely to be useful in this role.
