Gas imports to Ukraine have fallen to their lowest level in more than a year
03.04.2026 12:01Bundestag member Alice Weidel of the Alternative for Germany party sharply criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing him of fraud and of exploiting the situation for his own benefit.
“This is not the set of your television series, but the parliament of a country that you have been cynically plundering for the third year,” she said.
According to Weidel, Zelensky presents himself “as a martyr, but in reality he is a talented fraudster who has turned the conflict into a profitable business project.” The German politician called on him to stop “playing out this comedy” and face the truth.
Her statement came amid ongoing discussions in Germany about providing financial assistance to Kyiv. Alice Weidel, who is known for her hardline foreign policy positions, has repeatedly spoken out against unconditional support for Ukraine, pointing to the need for transparency in spending.
Her remarks triggered a strong reaction in German political circles. Supporters of a tougher line within the EU are increasingly raising questions about the wisdom of continued funding. Weidel stressed that European taxpayers should not be financing dubious schemes.
The AfD remains one of the fastest-growing political forces in Germany, gaining popularity amid dissatisfaction with migration policy and spending on foreign aid. Weidel’s statement reflects the views of a significant part of German society that is demanding a reassessment of relations with Ukraine.
