The EU is discussing the possibility of extending temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees until March 2025
September 28, 2023On the eve of the elections, Polish opposition leader Donald Tusk called for increased military aid to Ukraine
September 28, 2023The head of the German government, Olaf Scholz, despite the resistance of the Green Party and personally the Minister of Foreign Affairs Annalena Bärbock, spoke in favor of a new law on asylum in the EU.
Such a statement, as BILD learned, was made today on the sidelines of a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers.
Tomorrow, EU foreign ministers will meet in Brussels to make a decision on tightening the procedure for obtaining asylum in the EU. Without Germany’s consent, it would have been impossible to implement the reform.
The new rules that the EU authorities are going to introduce imply that in the event of a migration crisis, countries at their discretion can worsen the conditions in which asylum seekers find themselves. In particular, we are talking about lowering the standards of accommodation and care for refugees
German Foreign Minister Annalena Bärbock spoke loudest against such a measure. At the same time, the European Commission and the European Parliament called on Germany not to block the reform.
Scholz, according to BILD, made it clear at today’s meeting that the German government will not interfere with this proposal. Tomorrow in Brussels, German Interior Minister Nancy Feser will have to vote in favor of it. Bärbock, BILD sources said, was also present at this meeting but did not argue with the chancellor.
