September 28, 2023Chancellor Olaf Scholz supports tightening EU asylum rules
September 28, 2023There are now more than four million Ukrainian refugees in the EU countries, about a million of them are staying in Germany.
All of them have a special status, which guarantees them the opportunity to legally remain in the EU.
The EU first used the Temporary Protection Directive after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. According to the introduced rules, Ukrainian refugees have the right to obtain a residence permit without bureaucratic delays. In addition, Ukrainian citizens can get a job in the EU, send their children to school and obtain health insurance.
The temporary protection mechanism initially extended until March 2024, but EU interior ministers are now negotiating its extension. German Interior Minister Nancy Feser has already stated that she will support the introduction of temporary protection until March 2025. EU countries must make this decision unanimously, and discussions are expected to take place in Brussels today.
