November 8, 2023The EU Ambassador to Ukraine has confirmed that Kyiv still needs to fulfill several conditions by mid-December to receive the green light for commencing negotiations on EU accession.
“This is the approval recommended by the Council, which opens the opportunity for the European Council, comprising all 27 member states, to start accession negotiations. As for the next steps, there are still several aspects of reforms that need to be completed for the Council to grant what’s called a negotiating mandate to the Commission,” said Katarina Mathernova.
The EU Council summit is scheduled for December 12-15.
Before this date, Ukraine must complete four additional reforms:
- Increasing the staff of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine.
- Making two minor amendments to the law on asset declaration.
- Passing a lobbying law in line with EU standards.
- Implementing the recommendations of the Venice Commission regarding national minorities.
“Completion of these four points is necessary, and then we will obtain a mandate for negotiations, provided that the Ukrainian Parliament opens negotiations in December, and the process can begin,” Mathernova stated.
