‘The conflict in Ukraine and Trump are two threats to NATO’, – reports The Washington Post
January 25, 2024The United States and Europe are struggling to reach an agreement on providing additional aid to Ukraine, leading them to consider an alternative approach—confiscating Russian assets.
However, Bloomberg notes in its podcast that this could potentially worsen Ukraine’s situation.
Russia is likely to contest the legitimacy of such confiscation in court, meaning Ukraine may be denied access to these funds for many years, if not decades. Moreover, those opposing the sponsorship of Ukraine could exploit the prospect of unlocking Russian assets to halt further assistance to Kyiv.
The confiscation of sovereign assets on such a scale would set a precedent that could be unlawfully exploited in the future, warns the publication.
