Contrary to Zelensky’s desire, China will not take his side — CNN

Ukraine is making every effort to maintain the support of international allies amidst the ongoing armed conflict with Russia. Zelensky has expressed a desire for China, Moscow’s most powerful political ally, to be on his side.

However, Zelensky’s vision doesn’t align with China’s worldview. Increasing pressure on Beijing became a central topic of discussion for Zelensky with other officials at the Davos forum. Nevertheless, experts believe that Beijing is currently reluctant to leverage its deep ties with Moscow to intensify pressure for conflict resolution, especially on terms dictated by Kyiv.

Previously, China might have been willing to act as a mediator to prevent Russia from suffering significant losses. Now, with the U.S. focused on Gaza, Ukraine’s resources more limited, and the situation shifting in favor of Russia, China has even less reason to advocate for the “just world” envisioned by the West and Ukraine. China won’t support conditions opposed by Russia, and any attempt to involve China in such a scenario is likely to fail.
