14.11.2024 14:56The incoming head of the White House, Donald Trump, is nominating Tulsi Gabbard as the Director of U.S. National Intelligence.
Gabbard has been outspoken in her criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and has called for dialogue with Russia.
Trump’s transition team released a statement regarding Gabbard’s nomination:
“For more than two decades, Tulsi has fought for our country and the freedoms of all Americans. As a former Democratic presidential candidate, she has broad bipartisan support – now she is a proud Republican! I know that Tulsi will bring the fearless spirit that has defined her illustrious career into our intelligence community, defending our constitutional rights and ensuring peace through strength. Tulsi will make us all proud,” Trump’s statement reads.
Gabbard, an Iraq War veteran and former Democratic Congresswoman, left the Democratic Party in 2022 due to differences on key issues, including support for Ukraine.
Before the full-scale war, she harshly criticized the Ukrainian government, referring to a “Zelensky dictatorship,” as evidenced by available video, and advocated for restoring relations with Russia.
She maintained this stance after the invasion began, claiming that Biden and the U.S. “provoked” Russia into attacking Ukraine.
In July 2022, Gabbard was placed by Ukraine on a list of American politicians, scholars, and activists accused of spreading “Russian propaganda.”
Gabbard’s nomination for such a significant position sends another troubling signal from Washington to the Ukrainian government, potentially indicating a major shift in U.S. policy towards Ukraine under President Trump.
Previously, it was reported that Trump intends to appoint Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, who opposes aid to Ukraine, as the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.
